Sustainability Day at Evendons Primary School
Evendons Primary School recently hosted a Sustainability Day, bringing together eco-professionals to share their expertise and discuss environmental challenges with pupils.
Among the guests were Jasmine Newhouse (Climate Action Advisor), Leanne Hughes (Sustainability Lead at Holme Grange School) along with four pupils, Elle Hayter (ecologist and parent), George Douglas (Douglas Energy Solutions), Sandra Pullen, Jonathan Adams (Environmental Consultant), and Arun Silva (Feilo Sylvania Lighting).
These guests engaged the pupils in lively discussions, during which children asked insightful questions about tackling climate change, protecting wildlife, and adopting sustainable practices in their daily lives. The enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the children demonstrated their interest in understanding and contributing to sustainability.
As part of the event, four pupils from Holme Grange School taught Year 1 pupils about food waste and shared their school's sustainability journey. Their interactive session was well received, sparking enthusiasm among the younger children.
Adding a creative twist to the day, Mr Silva concluded his talk by inviting the children to make paper airplanes and decorate the OptiClip Terra Paper Light, a sustainably made lighting unit, with designs reflecting their ideas. This activity encouraged the children to explore their creativity, reflect on the concept of sustainability, and express their understanding through their own designs.
Members of the School Council and Eco Champions participated in a sustainability workshop led by Jasmine Newhouse. During the session, pupils were challenged to redesign their school as an eco-friendly environment, leading to the creation of innovative ideas such as EV charging stations, beehives, recycling hubs, and uniform swap stations.
Ian Davies, Evendons Primary School's Sustainability Lead, shared his thoughts on the workshop: "It was genuinely amazing to see how in touch and aware our children are of the reasons why sustainability and climate are such a pressing issue. We really hope to start rolling out their ideas across the site as the year continues. Watch this space!"
