Halley House School judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted
Halley House School has once again achieved a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating, continuing to demonstrate its commitment to providing a high-quality education for the local children of Hackney.
Last July’s inspection saw an in-depth examination of the school by Ofsted inspectors over two days. Their report highlighted the school's effective curriculum, extensive programmes for pupils’ personal development, with the school environment being supportive, respectful and “accepting of difference”. Despite undergoing a period of change, the school has made significant strides in recent times. The revised and ambitious curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge they need to succeed in life: “Staff have raised expectations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. [...]. Staff received high quality training and teach with precision”.
Reading is a key focus at Halley House, with a structured phonics programme from Reception which helps pupils develop confidence and fluency in reading, and all pupils have regular opportunities to practise with books tailored to their needs from the school library.
Inspectors were impressed by the children’s positive behaviour around the school. The report highlights: “[...] a revised behavioural policy ensures there are high expectations. [...] Older pupils relish taking up responsibilities and act as role models for their younger peers.” Inspectors were particularly impressed by the positive relationships between staff and pupils, noting that children have positive attitudes to learning and are keen to contribute ideas.
The school's wide range of clubs and activities was also commended. Clubs match pupils' interests and talents, and promote their overall development. From arts to academic clubs, fencing, knitting or swimming, there is something for everyone.
Additionally, the school's extensive residential programme enriches the learning experience and broadens pupils' horizons. Last June, Year 6 pupils visited Florence for a cultural and artistic immersion. During their five day grand tour, the pupils visited the Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell' Accademia; they came face-to-face with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Botticelli.
The Ofsted report concluded by praising the strong support provided by the trust, which has enabled the school to make swift and targeted improvements.
Toby Mills-Bishop, Headteacher said: “Halley House School is proud to have been judged ‘Good’ again. In an area which has recently seen schools closing, we are very happy to be a ‘Good’ school, popular with parents and children, and we are proud to offer an excellent education for all our pupils.”
Mark Greatrex, BPET Chief Executive said: “We are delighted that Halley House School has once again received a 'Good' Ofsted rating. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff, who have created a positive and inclusive learning environment for all pupils despite the challenges of recent times.”
