BPET Poetry Recital competition 2025

The recent BPET poetry recital competition finals featured about 70 pupils from London and Berkshire: Deer Park School, Halley House School, Dollis Primary School, Watling Park School, Rivermead Primary School, The Heights Primary School and Evendons Primary School.

The competition began with an internal class round, where pupils performed for their classmates, who then voted for the best performers to advance to the next stage. The semi-finals saw participants perform in a whole-school assembly, with teachers and staff selecting the finalists. The final round brought together the winning poets from each school to recite their poems in front of their fellow finalists, the judge, and the accompanying teachers. After careful deliberation, the judges named Halley House School as the overall winner of this year's competition!

Rivermead Primary School's Headteacher, Brian Prebble, said: "The poetry competition was an amazing opportunity for our children to get involved in. Not only it was a trip to London meeting other schools - which is a learning experience in itself - but the whole process of having to learn and perform a poem, firstly in front of your class, then to your school and finally in front of unfamiliar faces, provides a steep confidence boost. Giving children access to these experiences and opportunities nourishes their whole education and growth".

The winning performers' videos will be entered into the Poetry by Heart competition, with the chance to perform at the Globe Theatre.

Laura Gregory, Chief Education Director, said: "From Reception to Year 6, our young performers have truly shone in the Poetry Recital Competition, showcasing not just their voices but their creativity and confidence. Whether reciting a favourite poem or sharing their own written words, these talented pupils have inspired us all with their remarkable talent and passion! A huge thank you to Victoria Coward, Deputy Headteacher at Deer Park School, for organising such a wonderful event and providing these pupils with the opportunity to shine!"
